The One Thing You Can Say That Changes Everything by The Knowledge Project

Why listen to this

What to say when someone comes to you with something hard — something they haven't been able to say. Plus the cleanest distinction of boundaries I've found, which helped me understand what it means to set mine up.

  1. “I’m so glad you’re talking to me about this.” — it says: the part of you feeling this way is connectable to me.
  2. “I believe you.” — not “I agree it was the worst day of your life”; just “your feelings are valid and real.” Confidence is self-trust, and this builds it.
  3. “Tell me more.” — and then nothing. No fixing.

Learning that you can trust your emotions actually is the core of how you regulate your emotions and how you make good decisions.

Boundaries are not threats. They’re actually an assertion of your own wants and needs within your relationship… a way of saying to someone: here’s what I need to still feel good in our relationship.
