looping to understand someone better

Saying back what someone told you in your own words. Getting it wrong still shows you're trying.

tagstags In any conversation, it’s really important to understand what other people are saying. Even if we think we understand, we have to really really make sure we understand it in our own words. Looping is a technique to do just that.

It’s summarizing what the other person is saying in your own words, even if it’s wrong, it shows that you are working hard to understand the person.

Using words like :

  • So what you are saying is…
  • Let me make sure I understand, is this what you mean …
  • I agree, you’re upset because…

it’s okay if you got it wrong, as long as you show that you are trying hard to understand. I have found that getting it wrong too many times though is also another point of frustration.
