the decision to leave work is never sudden
It's a pebble in your shoe. A promotion makes it subside, then it comes back bigger.
With every decision, it never is an abrupt “I am going to leave my job today and go surfing forever”. It’s the little frustrations that compound into a catalyst that makes that decision for you.
Khe Hy, mentioned that the decision to leave your job is like a pebble in your shoe. It’s just annoying enough to bother you but you might not do anything with it. Promotions and new positions will make that discomfort subside, but it comes back.
You can delay it with gratifications on the way but it’s like addiction, your frustrations get stronger and you need a larger gratification to solve that frustration. You’re annoyed -> they promote you -> you are less annoyed -> you get very annoyed again -> they have to give you a bigger raise to solve -> you get less annoyed. The cycle repeats.
That’s why companies like KPMG or corporate firms have a time bounded promotions to a certain extent. KPMG promotes every year and they have predicted the rough time frame before someone wants to quit, but they motivate them with a promotion. E.g. Stay for 1 more year and you will get a 20K increase.
It’s like a continuous promise of offsetting a bad situation.
