Why I hate certain words
Therapyspeak dilutes the words that matter. If trauma now means uncomfortable, what do you say to someone who's had the real thing?
This was a pretty good little episode on “Therapyspeak” which to me meant using clinical words to describe mundane states because the meaning of two reasons
- Hyper individualism (my pain it greater than yours, and since everyone uses “uncomfortable”, I have to use “trauma” just to show much worse it is)
- The fact that it’s becoming commonplace language, kids and others use it because others are using it too
I like the way this thinks because it explains why I hate it when people use certain words around me. Because they are diluting the severity of the word by using it in common settings. If “Trauma” is now uncomfortable, then what do you say to people who have experienced real trauma ?
This dilution is a problem but we can’t control the world, but we can control our feed and how our friends interpret the word. I choose to take a stance on certain meanings because I don’t like the dilution of it.
