Much like God of War (2018), this game and part 2 evoke a lot of emotion around family and grief, against a world that is already against you.
But instead of a powerful god, you play as humans in a zombie-filled world. And unlike the more cliché zombie games and movies, this is one where people have been living with it for years. It’s dystopian because everyone is selfishly saving themselves, and a glimmer of hope or happiness is rare.
As if the world wasn’t bad enough, the game focuses on what it means to be a good human when the world does not reward you for being one.
It starts and ends rather cliché, but for a story first told in 2013, it does a really good job of delivering the arc while making me question what I would do in a world like that.
When it’s easier to steal and cheat, what good is a moral compass? Why hold on to “good” when being bad is what keeps you alive? But then, what is the point of living if there’s no good in the world?
