how to navigate arguments

Going into a conversation you know you'll disagree in. Acknowledge, find agreement, drop the sweeping claims.

If you are heading into a conversation that you know will be an argument because you have opposing views, it helps to still understand everyone in the room to have more meaningful connections.

Here are a few points to keep in mind.

  • First acknowledge understanding. “Let me make sure I understand”
  • Then, find specific points of agreement “I agree with you on that”
  • Then temper your claims. Don’t make sweeping statements like “you always do that”

The goal is showing that the aim of this conversation isn’t winning, it’s understanding
