Why working after hours at a 9-5 doesn't make sense
Overachiever is carnival cash. It's worth nothing the moment you leave.
Unless you’re in sales or a commission based role, working harder than the expected doesn’t make sense because you are only valued for the time you put in the company.
Working after hours unreasonably doesn’t work well before the company has no way of rewarding you for your efforts other than giving you nice titles like “overachiever” or in Australia, “legend”.
It’s carnival cash. Once you leave the company, they don’t hold value. Bad company culture will force you to work long hours but have no way to repay you and even in some cases it’s expected that you do so.
At least companies like KPMG has an overtime system which is not great but it’s something. Other companies just don’t care.
